Guideline orthodoxy and resulting limitations of the APA Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of PTSD in Adults: Introduction to the Special Issue

This article introduces a special issue of the journal Psychotherapy. Dr. Courtois and I were inspired to create this special issue, and the accompanying special issue of Practice Innovations because of our collective dissatisfaction with both the process and outcome of APA’s PTSD Treatment Guidelines work group, of which I was a member, and which she chaired. This article discusses our experience of being part of that group, and our concerns about how the methodologies adopted by the APA to create those guidelines might create problems for both trauma therapists and their clients. If you read this article, please go on and read the entire issue.
